As time goes by I find it more and more difficult to separate my personal life from my professional life and as a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu I see real parallels that can be drawn between business, especially online business and this art form. One of the most striking ideas that really hit home for me was the principle of minimum strength with maximum efficiency. The idea that you can brawl with someone larger than you are and still maintain an advantage is groundbreaking. This wasn’t rhetoric this was real data gained from many matches between the Gracie family and a number of all-comers while they were trying to perfect their own system.
The more I have trained with my Professor and the other team members the more this became apparent that technique can overcome heavier bodyweight and strength.
So what does this have to do with Online Business Systems? Consider your own business for a second – doesn’t matter – builder, baker, candlestick maker! As I teach classes on Sales and Marketing in the Online Arena one of the principles I use is that all of your business worries can be solved by money. This may sound a little Gordon Gekko, so hear me out. Money cannot solve ALL your problems. But it’s very difficult to go bankrupt with $10 million in the bank (unless you owe more than that of course). So the principle holds out. Money is the blood that pumps through the heart of your business. Whether it’s a good heart is up to you.
If you buy in to this as a reality and that Cash truly is King then to solve any business issue all we need to do is generate more sales. Peter Drucker often said ‘nothing happens until someone sells something’, and this generally seems to be the case. I can hear mutterings at the back of the room: ‘this is all well and good but how do we generate more sales?’
Okay. Here is another one of my radical Sales theories that may resound and certainly applies to BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). The acquisition of a new customer has more to do with a series of patiently applied stages than a one-hit closing opportunity. We are not looking for a knockout blow but a series of steps that lead to a closing moment. As my old chess master used to say “nullify his defense and exploit his weakness”. I may be hung at the Salesmans convention for this statement, but this is my belief.
To look at this another way: you may consider yourself a hard selling machine. Crunching the numbers, taking hits, storming into battle each day, picking up a few injuries along the way. Or you can simply be an order taker! Timing each sales presentation to when the prospect is ready to listen to you … and even enjoys what you have to say. The latter option has to be the way to go.
